Begin with a Start

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago: the next best time to plant a tree is today.” Chinese Proverb
Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, tells a story about speaking to a full house audience. She was encouraging them to do the thing(s) they had wanted to do but had put off for years. She says a man in the front row raised his hand, and with a grumble said…”Do you have any idea how old I will be when I finally learn to play the piano?” Her response; “The same age you will be if you don’t.”
When is it too late? When do possibilities become impossibilities? When do we give up on a dream and settle for what is?
I say never. Almost all things are possible. Granted I will probably never dance for the Joffrey Ballet Co. But own a tutu and attend a ballet class for seniors? Hell Yeah!
If life got in the way and we didn’t do IT then, maybe now is the time. I have friends who are starting syndicated radio shows, writing novels, traveling to foreign countries, writing plays, dating younger men (YIKES), learning to speak a different language, taking up the fiddle, learning to cross country ski, starting a much needed non-profit, downsizing to a camper, and cooking WITHOUT BUTTER.
It’s never too late to plant a tree. A start is very good place to begin.
